English Lady: is it possible to buy daily travel cards here?

Le Monsieur Francais: yes, of course, all lines for 24 hours, 3 euros 60

EL: and is there a discount for over 60s?

MF: but no, Madame, it is more expensive

EL: and for the English?

MF: even more expensive! You see, Madame, you have a Prime Minister who doesn’t like the French

EL:  but we, the citizens, we like the French!

MF: ah, well…in that case, you can have tickets for the same price as us….

Context is everything?

I wasn’t at all concerned when I opened the curtains one morning recently in the Languedoc, and saw a man in army fatigues with a rifle at the far end of the vineyard. Ah, I said to myself, la chasse has started, I wonder if he’s hunting birds, or hare? Maybe even wild boar? And then I smiled as I wondered if I would be so sanguine if I saw the same sight at the bottom of my garden in England…
